Lady dipped old lace doilies in glue—wait until you see them light up the night

Directions

  1. Inflate the balloons to your desired lantern size and tie them securely.

  2. Cover each balloon with plastic wrap to prevent sticking.

  3. In a bowl, mix equal parts fabric stiffener or white glue and water to create a thin paste.

  4. Submerge a lace doily in the mixture, ensuring it is fully saturated.

  5. Carefully drape the doily over the balloon, smoothing out wrinkles so it conforms to the shape.

  6. Use clothespins or clips to hold the doily in place if needed.

  7. Repeat with additional doilies, slightly overlapping them to cover the entire balloon.

  8. Allow the doilies to dry completely (24–48 hours, depending on humidity).

  9. Once fully dry, gently pop the balloon and remove it, leaving the hardened lace shell.

  10. Trim any excess edges with scissors for a clean finish.

  11. Place an LED tea light or fairy lights inside the lantern.

  12. Hang the lantern using string or twine, or display it on a flat surface.

🌙 Variations & Tips

  • Mix different doily sizes and patterns to create varied lantern designs.

  • Use waterproof fabric stiffener for outdoor or patio use.

  • Add beads, charms, or subtle glitter before stiffening for extra sparkle.

  • Always use LED lights only—never real candles.
